How to Find a College Grant for Minority Students

Many college grant opportunities for minority students depend upon one’s particular ethnic background.  Therefore, depending on your ethnic background, you should also check out our pages on African American Grants , Hispanic Grants , and Native American Grants to help minorities pay for college. For Asian students, we recommend the National Association of Asian American Professionals.

Although the Pell Grant is not one of the minority college grants, it is often the key to additional financial aid for minority students.  Therefore, it is important to apply for a Pell Grant by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The Pell Grant can be considered the basis for eligibility for additional sources of money to pay for college.

To complete the FAFSA form, complete either a print a hard copy or fill out the form online. If opting for the online version, a Personal Identification Number (PIN) will be required.

In addition, minority college students should not overlook college grants issued by their home state. In many cases, filling out the FAFSA application for Federal Financial Aid is a prerequisite to obtaining additional college grants and scholarships for minorities. This is because many scholarships for minorities are awarded on the basis of financial need. The FAFSA application serves to demonstrate financial need. This can help minority college students obtain additional free money to help pay for college.

Students who are eligible for the Pell Grant may also be eligible for the FSEOG. If you are studying science, technology, mathematics, or a foreign language considered essential by the U.S. government, you may also be eligible for the American Competitiveness Initiative (ACI) and SMART grants.

The National Science Foundation sponsors the. Graduate Research Fellowship Program. They award research-based grants for students pursuing a master’s or doctoral degree. They encourage applications for women, ethnic minorities, and those with disabilities as a way of increasing diversity in the fields of science, mathematics, technology and engineering.

The National Association of Asian American Professions (NAAAP) has several scholarships each academic year.
