Grants and Scholarships for Arts Students

For undergraduate students, follow the advice on this website regarding the Pell Grant and undergraduate grants, in addition to seeking out the possibilities listed here.

At the master’s and doctoral level, it is also a great idea to look into the Jacob K. Javits Fellowships Program.  Since the fellowships are awarded on the basis of need, it is important to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  The application is available in January each year, for the following academic year.  It is best to apply in early January.  Funds from the Jacob K. Javits Fellowships can be used to help pay for a graduate degree in studio arts, photography, television, film, cinematography, theater arts, playwriting, screenwriting, acting, and dance.

The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) has a set of annual grants totaling more than $88 billion – from grants in martial arts, symphony programs, participation on National Public Radio (NPR), to partnerships with art groups at the state level. See here for details at the state level.

The W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund issues grants every year to students interested in humanistic photography.

DeVry’s University has an online associate’s degree in for art students. For information regarding grants for this program, you may wish to check this website for details regarding the Pell Grant, and grants for undergraduate students and vocational school students.

The Yale Center for British Art partner’s with the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art (PMC) in London. See this site or information regarding travel grants for students involved in British art, architectural history, decorative arts, design history, graphic arts, and film).

The Worldstudio AIGA Scholarships are for those of minority and economically disadvantaged backgrounds.  The goal is to help the scholarship recipients to fulfill their artistic dreams and participate in their communities.  The scholarship’s deadline is March 30, 2012.   Eligible fields of study include the artistic side of advertising, fine arts, graphic design, illustration, interactive design, motion graphics, and photography.

 

Martial Arts Grants

The USA Martial Arts Foundation lists resources for martial arts students.

Grants for the martial arts are also in the form of non-profit grants for a dojo. Here you will find a list of martial art grants.

 

Acting Scholarships

In regards to acting scholarships, The New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts has a page dedicated to helping candidates and students make acting school affordable. This page includes details about financial aid, acting scholarships, outside scholarships, and federal student loans.

The Irene Ryan Acting Scholarships are awarded to acting students. There are several $500 scholarships awarded every year. In addition, two acting scholarships of $2,500 are awarded every year. For details check with their national offices at (212) 221-1130.

The John L. Dales Scholarship Fund through the Screen Actors Guild Foundation has a site with applications for annual acting scholarships.

Through the Screen Actors Guild Foundation there is also the Woodbury University’s Matching Scholarship Program, for students pursuing a graduate degree. The graduate degree could be in a number of disciplines in which the entertainment industry is involved.
